SanGaMa celebrated its 2013 Onam event on Sept 22, 2013. It was a much awaited event and truly a wonderful opportunity to see so many Malayali families in traditional attire gathered from the tri-valley towns to celebrate this ancient and unique festival of Kerala.
Our Thiruvathira dance exceeded all prior expectations!!! The largest Thiruvathira we ever had was with 10 Mankas (women dressed in traditional Onam attire) but this time we had a super-grand one with 14 Mankas! Check out the video in our prior events page.
Our 20-item super-duper Ona-Sadya was served with textbook precision! ...thanks to the extreme volunteering of our wonderful folks!
Children were amazed to see Maveli walking in to the accompaniment of traditional drums(Chenda) and little girls holding Thalams (decorated plates) to honor this ancient king who ruled the State once!
Several young and old artistes displayed their vocal and instrumental talents. Thanks for keeping up the spirit of Onam!
Check out some of the pictures in our home page slideshow or videos in the prior events page
If you don't know what is Onam check out the Wikipedia site.
Thanks to everyone who worked selflessly to make this event an outstanding success! We are also quite obligated to the local sponsors from our community Rama Mehra- East Bay Real Estate Specialist and Anju Khemani of Goddard School, San Ramon, California.
Mahabali's rule is considered as the golden era of Kerala. The following song is often sung over Onam.
Listen to the song here.
“ Maveli nadu vaneedum kalam,
manusharellarum onnupole
amodhathode vasikkum kalam
apathangarkkumottillathanum
kallavum illa chathiyumilla
ellolamilla polivachanam
kallapparayum cherunazhiyum
kallatharangal mattonnumilla
adhikal vyadhikalonnumilla
balamaranangal kelppanilla
”
... (Translation)
“ When Maveli ruled the land,
All the people were equal.
And people were joyful and merry;
They were all free from harm.
There was neither anxiety nor sickness,
Deaths of children were unheard of,
There were no lies,
There was neither theft nor deceit,
And no one was false in speech either.
Measures and weights were right;
No one cheated or wronged his neighbor.
When Maveli ruled the land,
All the people formed one casteless races ”
