#EnteThiruvananthapuram: In a rare historic moment, a Malayali woman has become a Mayor in England. Trivandrum Pothencode native, Manju Shahul Hameed took the oath as Labour party’s Mayor of Croydon.
Manju has been a councillor since 2006 and contested from the Broad Green ward in Croydon, which was hit by riots in 2011. Out of the 70 individual seats counted Manju’s Labour party won 40 seats while the Conservatives got 30 seats in the recent election. She was nominated as Labour’s choice to be Croydon Mayor in 2014-15 by the Croydon Council’s Labour Group.

Manju Shahul Hameed came to London in 1996, by marrying Rafi Shahul Hameed who works with the London Transport. She graduated from Chempazhanthy S. N. College and pursued masters in scientific and engineering software in Greenwich University in London. Manju was also active in student politics during her college days. Her father, M. Jalaludin, had retired Special Branch Police, while her mother, Raihanath, is no more.
Croydon is a large town in South London. She said her top priority is to raise the profile of Croydon which has a huge population of Malayalis. Manju’s victory is indeed a very proud moment for the Malayalees around the globe.
Another Malayali who reached the top of Labour party is Omana Gangadharan, who was the civic ambassador in the Newham borough of London.
